'Erebus has a prominent place in Greek Mythology meaning ‘The darkness of the underworld, a dark place where lost souls rest on the way to Hades, the abode of the dead.’

(the active volcano, Mt Erebus, dominates the landscape of Ross Island where the bases are located).

The following books, many of them written by the original explorers, provide insights into the heroic-era of exploration and historic events in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica.

Many of these publications are available in later editions.

Classic Travel Books (a division of The Long Riders' Guild Press) has recently released reprints of Aurora Australis (E Shackleton), Scott's Last Expedition (R F Scott) and the South Pole Ponies (Theodore Mason)
